Help & FAQ
Answers for recording, audio, webcam, saving and browser compatibility.
Getting Started
How do I record a browser tab?
Choose This Tab, then Start Recording. In Chrome’s source picker, select the tab you want to capture. Avoid selecting the FAKT Video Recorder tab unless you want a mirror effect.
How do I record my full screen?
Choose Full Screen, then Start Recording. In Chrome’s picker, select a screen, window or tab.
How do I record webcam only?
Choose Webcam Only, then Start Recording. The screen-sharing window is not used. Camera is required; microphone is optional.
Audio
How do I record microphone audio?
Select a microphone and leave microphone audio enabled. Grant permission when the browser asks.
How do I record tab/system audio?
Enable System / tab audio, then also turn on Share audio in Chrome’s picker when you start a tab or screen recording.
Why is system audio missing?
Chrome only includes tab or system audio if you enable Share audio in the picker. Some sources (certain windows) may not provide audio.
Why does Chrome show Share audio?
That is Chrome’s own control for including tab or system sound in the capture. FAKT Video Recorder cannot enable it for you.
Webcam
How do I enable webcam overlay?
Turn on Webcam overlay before you start a This Tab or Full Screen recording. You can drag the bubble in the preview.
Why is the webcam overlay off by default?
Overlay stays off until you enable it, so a tab or screen recording does not unexpectedly include your camera.
Recording
How long can I record?
FAKT Video Recorder is designed for 60+ minute recording sessions, subject to available local storage and browser/device limits. There is no artificial 60-minute cutoff.
Why do I see a mirror effect?
Selecting the FAKT Video Recorder tab itself records the recorder page, which creates a recursion/mirror effect. Choose a different tab in Chrome’s picker.
How do I pause/resume?
Use Pause during a recording, then Resume to continue. The timer does not count paused time.
How do I stop safely?
Press Stop and wait until the recording is finalized locally. Then preview and Save to Computer.
Saving
Where are recordings stored?
Finished recordings stay in this browser using technologies such as OPFS or IndexedDB until you save or delete them. They are not uploaded to FAKT.
How do I Save to Computer?
Open the recording from My Recordings or the completion dialog and choose Save to Computer to download the local file.
Can FAKT access my recordings?
No. Recording files remain local. FAKT does not receive your screen, webcam, microphone or recorded video content.
What happens if browser storage is full?
The recorder monitors available browser storage and will stop a recording if space is nearly gone, to reduce the risk of a damaged file. Free space or delete old local recordings, then save important files to your computer.
Compatibility
Does it work in Chrome?
Yes. Current desktop Google Chrome over HTTPS is the primary supported browser, including Chrome’s native source picker.
Does it work in Edge?
Current desktop Microsoft Edge over HTTPS is also supported for tab, screen and webcam recording.
What permissions are required?
Tab or screen capture, and optionally camera and microphone, depending on the mode you choose. Deny a permission and that source cannot be recorded.
Is HTTPS required?
Yes. Browsers require a secure context (HTTPS) for camera, microphone and screen capture APIs.
Pro, export and privacy
Is FAKT Video Recorder free?
Yes. Free recording includes 720p and 1080p with no watermark and no account. Pro is optional at $10/month.
Does it add a watermark?
No. FAKT Video Recorder does not add a watermark to Free or Pro recordings.
Do I need an account?
No account is required for Free recording. An account is required only to subscribe to Pro.
Can I record in 1080p?
Yes. 1080p is included in Free when your capture source can provide it.
Can I record my Chrome tab with audio?
Yes. Choose This Tab, enable System / tab audio, then also turn on Share audio in Chrome’s picker.
Are recordings uploaded to a server?
No. Recording files, tracks, editor output and exports stay in this browser until you save or delete them.
Can I export MP4?
Pro can export a real MP4 locally using WebCodecs where the browser supports it. This is not a renamed WebM file. Long conversions use CPU and storage; the original recording is kept.
Can I export MP3 or WAV?
Pro can export WAV and MP3 locally in the browser. Audio is not sent to FAKT servers.
Can I record screen and webcam separately?
Pro can optionally record separate local tracks for screen, webcam, microphone and system/tab audio, plus the combined recording. This uses more storage and is off by default.
Can I record system audio?
For tab or screen recording, enable System / tab audio and Share audio in Chrome’s picker. Some windows may not provide audio.
Why can’t I record a protected video?
Some sites and apps block capture of protected media. That is a browser or content-protection limit, not a FAKT upload.
Does 4K work on every monitor?
No. 2K and 4K require Pro and a capture source, display, browser and device that can provide that resolution.
Mobile Recording
Can I use FAKT on mobile?
Yes. Open the same website on a phone or tablet. Available features depend on what your mobile browser actually provides, not on a generic “mobile” block.
Can I record with my phone camera?
If the browser provides camera access, choose Webcam Only and allow camera permission when asked. FAKT does not turn the camera on until you start that mode or enable overlay.
Can I use my microphone?
If the browser provides microphone access, allow permission when you enable or test the microphone, or when a recording needs it. You can continue without a microphone for modes that do not require it.
Why is screen recording unavailable on some phones?
Many mobile browsers do not provide web screen capture. FAKT detects whether screen capture exists. If it does not, This Tab and Full Screen stay visible but unavailable. Granting permission cannot enable an API the browser does not provide.
Why can desktop record tabs/full screen but my phone cannot?
Desktop Chrome and Edge typically provide tab and screen capture. Most phone browsers currently do not. If a future mobile browser adds screen capture, FAKT will allow it automatically.
What permissions are needed?
Microphone and camera only when you enable those sources. Screen capture uses the browser’s own picker and is requested only when you press Start Recording for This Tab or Full Screen. Permission does not upload media.
Are my mobile recordings uploaded?
No. Recordings stay in this browser until you save or delete them. Camera, microphone and screen content are not uploaded to FAKT.
Why should I keep the screen awake?
Mobile browsers may suspend the page when the screen locks or you switch apps, which can interrupt recording. Keep this browser open and the screen awake. Wake Lock is used only where the browser supports it.
